This is because you don’t have to sit in traffic, you can work in your pajamas and you have full autonomy over your day. However, if you’re not disciplined, working from home could become the catalyst to your downfall. In order to make sure that working from home continues to be a blessing to your life, consider these five tips.

1. Create a schedule.

Before you go to bed each night, sit down and write out everything you need to get done the following day. Be realistic about what you can actually get done. Then, schedule it out. Make sure that you make a separation between work tasks that need to get done versus personal tasks that need to get done. Many people work well within time blocks. You can decide to schedule two hours of time to focus on a specific task. Once you’re realistic about the time it’ll take, this will help you create a solid schedule to knock out all of your tasks. 2. Eliminate distractions.

If you’re on the clock at a job, you’re not going to take calls from your friends. You’re not going to spend an hour talking about the great weekend you had. Why? You don’t want to run the risk of being unproductive, getting fired and becoming destitute. While this may sound extreme, this can be the result if you don’t focus and eliminate distractions. Give yourself a few rules. Don’t accept any call that’s not an emergency within certain time frames. Do not watch TV or listen to podcasts that will throw you off of your game. Get into a zone and focus on what you need to get done until it’s complete.

3. Take breaks.

Knowing that you need to eliminate distractions, take breaks. It is very difficult for the average person to sit down and work for an extended period of time. Consider using the Pomodoro method. The Pomodoro method allows you to focus and work for 20 minutes. Time yourself. Once you’ve worked for 20 minutes, take five minutes to take a break. Alternate between the 20 minutes and the five-minute sessions. As you get into this cycle, increase 20 minutes to 45 minutes. During your breaks, you can stretch, make yourself a cup of coffee or do a few jumping jacks. It’s also a good idea to disconnect when it’s time to eat lunch. Unless you’re pressed for time and have to get a certain task done by a specific deadline, try to eat lunch away from your desk. It’ll give you a chance to recharge and prepare for the work you need to complete in the afternoon hours.

4. Get dressed.

Many women fall into a rut when they work from home. This is because they know no one will see them and so they don’t really have to put in a ton of effort. However, it’s still wise to get dressed and look pretty for yourself. You’ll feel better, look better and perform better. Always maintain your look. Make it a point to get a manicure and pedicure. Put on some light make-up. Don’t spend the majority of the day in your pajamas or yoga pants. Put on real clothes. They can be comfortable clothes but make sure that you get dressed. 5. Create an office space.

Buy a desk, a lamp and any other desk accessories you need in order to be productive. Make it a point to work specifically at your desk. Do not bring work to bed. You want to make sure you have a separation between your work life and your personal life. This will help you create work/life balance.
