Just imagine.
You open your eyes and you are surrounded by beautiful handmaidens as your mother, the queen of Egypt, watches over you with intent. Your sight struggles with the sparkling gold and jewels that are lined across the rooms and suddenly a man dressed rather funny arrives. He wears makeup and wears a headdress. Yet, is well built and dark. He takes you in his arms and screams in a language you barely recognise. You wonder why they are all rejoicing… maybe because the new king is born!
You would spend your tender ages alongside the great vizier of the kingdom. He would show you around, talk to you about the great projects for Egypt, religion and the great gods like Ra, Iris, Osiris and many more. He would explain about alliances and trade and as he passed by three mysterious structures covered in the sands of Sahara, he bows in respect. “The Great Pyramids Of Giza,” he said. “Tomb of our great ancestors.” You would also pay respect and all of a sudden, you realise that tomorrow, you’re going to start your apprenticeship in archery and melee combat alongside the commander. What a day…
Years passed and you became a trained warrior and a skilled archer. Yet, a dark hour strikes your family when your father, the Pharaoh, passes away. You decide to assist the rituals before the burial. As you look over the body of your father, a man wearing the mask of the god of the dead, Anubis, comes to clean him. He then slices his chest, removing his lungs, liver, kidneys and other vital organs except for the heart. According to the texts that you read, the heart is used in the judgement of the afterlife. He then puts a sharp tool in the pharaoh’s nose and extracts the brain. As he throws it away, he whispers, “useless…” He would then embalm the body with oil and cover it with salt for 40 days…
40 days elapsed and you arrive at the temple once again to assist the funeral. Women are wailing and crying. The priest with the Anubis mask arrives and retrieves the body of the king. He then wraps it in linen. The body is then decorated with jewels and ornaments finishing it with a golden mask of the king placed over the head. Acolytes arrive and place the mummified body in three sarcophagi and lock it in a tomb in the Valley Of The Kings. You realise that you are now going to become the new king of Egypt.
On the day of the coronation, you are bathed in milk and water. As you arrive in your room, you notice thousands of gifts, jewels, gemstones, precious resources and fragrance placed in trays waiting for you. Your mother helps you to get dressed and handmaidens would do your make up. Soon after, you proceed to the ceremony where you ascend to the throne. A priest would adore your headdress with a snake icon and hand you a sceptre. You are now the king of Egypt. With the pride comes great responsibilities and soon, you would also make Egypt great… In the distance, a colossal statue with your face is being carved…
Obviously, we brought you to a scenario of a pharaoh yet, a civilian of Egypt would also have an amazing lifestyle, don’t forget that! With lots of labour and simplicity, each of them got a story to tell that words can’t describe. Let’s hope that one-day science progresses and allows voyages to the past…
