25 Jul How to become a counsellor
A career in counselling is rewarding and challenging but can take years of practitioner training. We take a look at the benefits of this career path, and some tips on how to get started.
Why become a counsellor?
As well as being hugely rewarding and personally challenging, a career in counselling offers flexibility, allowing practitioners to take on as many, or as few clients as they wish. It’s also possible to work from home and there’s plenty of scope to specialise and develop your skills with ongoing learning.
Becoming a counsellor also means looking after yourself, and most counsellors find that this career path improves their own mental health and well-being. It’s also a great time to become a therapist, with more people than ever reaching out to find help and therapy entering the mainstream.
What do I need to become a counsellor?
Recommended training requires obtaining a diploma or certificate in counselling. It is also recommended that you start with an Introduction to Counselling course, before moving on to a Counselling Certificate and then onto Core Practitioner Training. Many students will be able to move straight from the introduction course to the core training, after which time they will be able to practise as a psychotherapist or counsellor. During core practitioner training you will see your own clients and get a real taste of the job.
If you’re not sure this is the right path for you, why not start with a mental health training awareness certificate? This does not qualify you to become a counsellor but will provide you with a solid understanding of a range of mental health conditions. In fact, many delegates on mental health courses become inspired to move into a career in counselling. Counselling is an excellent career, offering personal development, flexibility, and most importantly, the chance to make a real difference in people’s lives. Rigorous training is essential in becoming a successful counsellor, but you can start your journey with an introduction course or even a mental health awareness course.
