22 Sep Why Age UK needs donated knitting items
Age UK is encouraging people to put aside their unwanted knitting items and be ready to donate them for the next Big Knit Campaign. This will help raise essential funds for the charity as groups of UK knitters come out in force to make cute bobble hats for drinks, as well as much-needed items for vulnerable groups.
The Big Knit Campaign
The UK’s biggest age charity, Age UK, will be calling for a range of knitting-related donations, from yarn itself to accessories such as patterns and needles. All kinds of yarn will be welcomed, including leftover Merino yarn or any unused Aran yarn.
In turn, these items will be given to knitting groups up and down the UK. The groups will put these items to good use by knitting, among other things, bobble hats for Innocent drinks, such as the brand’s flagship smoothies. This is all part of Innocent’s Big Knit Campaign, which will also see knitting groups create scarfs and hats for the homeless and items for premature babies.
Funds for Age UK
The bobble hats will be seen on bottles in stores and Innocent will donate 25p to Age UK for every bottle sold with a bobble hat. That money will be spent across Age UK’s essential projects, operations, and services.
Notably, this includes helping fight fuel poverty among the UK’s vulnerable elderly population this winter. The Big Knit has been going for over ten years and in that time Age UK has raised an incredible £2.4 million.
So, have a dig around your knitting kit and see if you have any Aran yarn from https://www.woolcouturecompany.com/collections/aran-yarn left over, or indeed any yarn at all. All colours and types are welcome. Perhaps you have a helpful pattern you no longer need or needles you no longer use.
Details for the next campaign have not yet been announced, but you can register your interest on the Age UK website. If you want to take part in the knitting, you could also get in touch with your local knitting group to see if they’re getting involved.
