Top low-cost hobbies to try in 2023

With the cost of living crisis affecting household finances, it would be easy to assume that new and exciting hobbies are out of reach for many. That couldn’t be further from the truth, however, with a brilliant collection of potential hobbies both easily available, and, most importantly, low-cost to begin with.

Without further ado, enjoy the below list of low-cost hobbies to begin today!

1) Reading

There’s no such thing as not enjoying reading, you just haven’t found the right material yet! From fictional worlds full of magic, to historical non-fiction texts, to autobiographies. The list truly is endless! Even better, with a library card, you can access a huge range of texts for absolutely nothing! It’s hard to get lower cost than free, after all.

2) Knitting

No longer reserved for little old ladies making itchy jumpers and little baby boots, knitting has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years among a younger (and much trendier) audience. It’s been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, The Kim Foundation states that knitting helps with serotonin release, so it’s pretty much guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. For the cost of a ball of wool and a pair of needles, you can be off! Or even better, start off with a handy knitting kit, which provides you with everything necessary to get started on a project, such as those found at

3) Volunteer

By its very nature, volunteering is the epitome of a low-cost activity. All it has to cost you is some free time, and in return, you get that nice glow of knowing that you’ve done something to help somebody (or something) else. You could volunteer for an immense variety of things, from helping the homeless to working with stray animals. What’s not to love?

This is just a (very) brief collection of ideas to get you going, but there’s an endless pot of low-cost activities to occupy your time. Hobbies truly don’t have to cost the earth, and as seen above can even provide health and well-being benefits as a bonus.
