How to survive your first year of uni

Starting university can be stressful, with many new and unfamiliar challenges. Luckily, there are many steps you can take to try to prevent the experience from becoming too overwhelming.

Planning

A journalism degree of the kind offered at School of Journalism will have a different workload to a maths degree, but you still need to track your obligations. It is not just about lectures and coursework deadlines, but also sports training, music practice and other hobbies. Plan meals ahead so you can shop for and even cook and freeze them in advance.

Time outside of studies

It’s not healthy to spend all your time working. Your schedule needs to include hobbies and other interests, as well as time to just relax. Go for a walk in nature, hang with friends, spend a morning in a coffee shop, or check out the events in the Student Union.

Healthy lifestyle

Just as in other areas of your life, basics such as adequate sleep, a balanced diet with at least some vegetables, and regular exercise in some form have a powerful impact on your health and mood. You will feel better and be able to work harder.

Flexibility

Most importantly, be flexible. Figure out your personal system, but do not be afraid to change it if necessary. You do not have to participate in every activity. Instead, take your time and make every moment worthwhile.

It is almost inevitable that you will encounter some stress at university. How you deal with it will decide whether your overall experience remains positive.
