Flat Weight Bench Sizes and Room Needed

Yes, a flat weight bench is a straightforward piece of equipment, but I have lost count of the number of poor dimension purchases I have had to clear from warehouses over the years.

Standard Bench Dimensions

Typical dimensions for a flat weight bench are 120 cm/130 cm (L) x 25 cm/30 cm (W) x 45 cm/50 cm (H). Some compact models are available that are shorter in height, ideal for use in small spaces. Make sure you check the weight loading of any compact bench as well as its dimensions.

Clear Space Around the Bench

Leave 60 cm space around each side of the bench plus the end and go for the recommended space for home exercise as laid out by the NHS to keep clearance around the area where you will be exercising.

Check Your Ceiling Height

This ceiling height is recommended for the “press” (dumbbell lifting) exercises, in which you will be lifting overhead in various positions. A lower ceiling will restrict some of these exercises.

Measure the Room First

Using tape, create a mock-up of the bench and measure it against the space where it will go. Take into account the extra space you require on each side for easy movement.

Doorway and Staircase Clearance

For a flat bench through a doorway the standard width is 76cm. If you need to go up stairs with the bench measure the landings as well.

Just take a few minutes to measure out the flat bench size on your floor with a tape measure before you order it!
