19 Nov How to crochet a granny square
The granny square is one of the first projects you’ll ever undertake in your crochet journey. This multi-tasking, versatile wonder is easy to make and can be used to create all manner of delightful crafts! So how do you get started?
What to know about granny squares
Granny squares are simply crochet fabric squares made in the round, usually using double stitches in clusters. They can be stitched together to make blankets, cushions, jackets, bunting, jumpers, scarves and pretty much anything you can think of! You can start by researching your own projects or you can make it easy by looking at premade crochet blanket kits. Recognising granny squares
Each cluster of treble crochets will have three posts and each corner will have two chains. The straight edges will have one. Sometimes the chains can be different; for example, some people use three chains at a corner but it all depends on your preferences. You’ll gain this kind of insight as you become more knowledgeable about crochet and develop your own skills. Be patient as this takes time!
Making the granny square
You’ll need to make a slipknot and put it on your hook, and then insert the hook into the first chain stitch. Pull the yarn over and then pull it through your stitch, before slipping the stitch through the hook loop. This will create the centre of the granny square. Check the hole in the ring centre as this is where the work will emanate from for the initial round. You can then continue the process and add different colours for each section as you go.
Common errors with Granny squares
The main issue with granny squares when you’re a beginner, is that you can easily drop stitches or lose your technique midway. You can also find that the colour scheme becomes confused and you end up making general errors. However, don’t worry about this as it’s all part of the learning process!
