What a CCTV Drain Survey Finds in Coventry Homes

What Does a CCTV Drain Survey Reveal in the Drains of Houses in Coventry?

Coventry, in particular, is home to a large number of homes, ranging from 1930s’ Semi Detached Houses to Post War Estates and pre-1980s Older Terraced Houses. In consequence, the drains below these properties are also of varying ages. Knowing what to expect when a Drainage Survey is carried out will enable you to act quickly if any problems are found.

Cracked and Displaced Clay Joints

These joints, where the clay pipes join together, are prone to cracking due to the ground moving. In some cases, the joints can also become displaced resulting in soil entering the pipe through the joints and roots from nearby plants growing into the drains. A displaced joint can result in the pipe collapsing.

Fat and Grease Buildup at Kitchen Outlets

A build up of cooking fat in the pipes can cool and stick to the walls of the pipes, forming a thick hardening material within a few meters of the kitchen outlet. This will cause the pipe to narrow and eventually to get blocked by anything that is trying to pass through it. A CCTV drain survey can reveal the fat blockages in the pipes and they will require a high-pressure jetting of the pipes to clear.

Misconnected Surface Water Pipes

Misconnected surface water pipes are a common problem found on post-war estates, where in some cases gutters and yard gullies have been connected to the foul drain, instead of being connected to a separate surface water system. During periods of heavy rainfall this can cause the foul drain to become overloaded, resulting in sewage coming up into the property.

Root Ingress at Collar Joints

Roots from trees and shrubs in your garden will attempt to infiltrate your drains at the collar joints. Once inside the pipe the roots will grow in all directions to form a fine mat. This will trap all waste materials and cause blockages. A drain inspection can reveal fine root strands or in extreme cases a large ball of growth filling the whole of the pipe.

Bellied or Settled Pipe Runs

A dip in the pipe can create a siltation point (where the silt from the surrounding ground settles in the bottom of the dip), creating an occasional blockage. These types of blockages can sometimes go undetected as the pipe may appear to be draining before the section of pipe containing the water becomes blocked.

If your drains are getting slower, are blocking or you have no idea what’s been going on down there since you moved into your home, a camera inspection will expose exactly what is going on down there.
