Even if you’re not selling physical products over the net, it’s important that people can find your business and have some idea of the services you offer via the internet. So what are the key things you need to ensure you’re well represented in the online world?

The Importance of Store Design

For people selling physical products, the internet presents a massive opportunity. But if you’re to succeed at selling online, it’s vital to have a well-designed store with great Branding and marketing which a Branding Agency found at sites like who will be able to help you as they are experts in their field. Customers aren’t tolerant of sites that are badly designed or hard to navigate. Designing a shopping site from scratch may seem daunting, but there are alternatives. You can choose to start out using an existing marketplace site as a portal. Amazon Marketplace or eBay are popular options that allow you to get started in e-commerce with minimal set-up costs.

These won’t have to be just for physical products in future, either. Amazon has already launched a marketplace for local services in the US that is likely to spread elsewhere if it takes off.

Using a portal site, however, can make it hard to get your products to stand out. You can gain an edge by having your own store design within sites such as eBay.

Finding Customers

Having a smart store, of course, is no good if people can’t find it. You need to ensure that your online shop is optimised so that it shows up in search results. This is an ongoing process, as the main search engines – Google in particular – regularly update their algorithms to take account of changes in habits and technology.

For example, mobile-friendly sites are prioritised, and recently Google started to reward sites that are geared towards local customers. This allows people to search for and find shops or restaurants, for example, in their local area.

The web therefore becomes an extension of your marketing strategy even if you’re not actually using it to sell products directly.

How to Measure the Success of Your Website

If your company does the majority of its business online, then a successful, busy, and well-designed website is essential. You may be wondering how to judge the success of your website; just follow these tips.

Count Your Hits

Perhaps the most obvious way to judge your website’s success is to count the number of hits it receives every day, week or month. By assessing who visits your website and when, you can discover when the website is popular and when it isn’t. You can then use this information to update your site and improve it. This may be to your home page or a specific page on your website. For example if a company such as wanted to see how much interest there was in their Plastic Moulding  product or service, they may track the hits to this particular page.

Search Engine Rankings

One vital feature of a successful website is its search engine rankings. If your company is a women’s clothes shop in York, then when a customer searches for ‘clothes shop York’, your website should be ranked among the highest pages. The further back it is, the less likely customers are to find it. Forbes provides a list of ways to improve your search engine rankings. You can also view the search engine terms that led people to your site, and you can use these to improve your SEO.

Online Revenue

If you are a retail business, then revenue from your online sales is a good way to measure the success of your website. Assess what items are most or least popular online, and it may help you to understand your business. Ad revenues are also important – for example, the Daily Mail’s ad revenues soared to over £62m in 2014.

Consider Customer Feedback

Businesses may put emphasis on the importance of customer feedback as a way to measure a website’s success. Add a feedback form on your site, and you can start to gather important information about your website. Ask questions such as ‘Was the website easy to use?’ and ‘Did you like the look and feel of the site?’ This will help you to make positive changes in the future.

Measuring a website’s success can be confusing, as it may not just be about the number of hits or the financial reports. A successful website also has to be accessible, easy to find, and stress-free to use. By focusing on these suggestions, you will have a better idea of how your site is working and how to improve it.

Is there much point in mobile web design?

Any conversation about web design today will revolve around arguments over the need to optimise for visitors using mobile devices. And while having a mobile-friendly site may not have been necessary 12 months ago, it is undeniably vital in 2019.

This is mostly due to Google’s latest algorithm update, which has given mobile-friendly sites rankings bump while negative effecting a large number of sites which do not comply with its rules on optimisation.

Some studies suggest that almost half of all sites which previously ranked in the top 10 on Google’s mobile SERPs for their target keywords have been penalised as a result of the update.

With advice from agencies like, who are a Web Design Yorkshire firm, it is possible for smaller companies to prepare themselves for the emerging mobile-dominated era of web browsing. But aside from the need to adhere to new SEO guidelines, is mobile web design really worth harnessing?

Common Sense Solutions

A website is for many businesses the first place that prospective customers will be able to engage with them. And people are so attuned to the trends of the internet today that it is entirely possible to put off visitors within the first few seconds if a site is not up to scratch.

From a mobile user’s point of view, the most off-putting elements to encounter are muddled menu systems and interfaces that look fine on a desktop monitor but do not scale to fit a touchscreen display, as well as slow page load times that leave them waiting around while elements slowly fill the screen.

Rather than having to build two sites, one for mobile and one for desktop, businesses can utilise responsive web design techniques to make a single site that works just as well on a PC as it does on a smartphone.

Responsiveness does mean the scaling back of certain elements and the removal of others altogether. But in the process a site can become more sleek, svelte and better able to earn clicks and conversions at a time when minimalism and flexibility are the most highly prized assets of any site.

Emphasising Efficiency

Web design in the mobile age is not just about making an interface which is easy to use, but also about ensuring that visitors are not having the resources of their smartphone or tablet unnecessarily hogged by a site.

Google is even working to reduce the amount of content which autoplays in its own browser so that things like battery life and data allowance are not adversely impacted by embedded videos, ads and other interactive elements.

Admittedly the Flash platform has died a death in the portable realm, with HTML5 preferred. But the point remains the same; desktop sites cater to people with PCs, monitors and a wired internet connection with no limits on bandwidth or downloads, while mobile design allows businesses to streamline everything to avoid overburdening devices which are fundamentally less powerful.
